Engaging
In my annual Million Dollar Consulting® Conventions, I usually have one speaker from outside my community whose regular fee I pay with their expenses. I also have main stage speakers from within the community.
Aside from those whose heavy schedules have required them to arrive and depart solely around the time of their talk, I’ve noticed that the others don’t merely stay but they attend the other sessions. Most recently, Lou Heckler, one of the most accomplished and successful speakers in the world, attended the entire conference and engaged with everyone.
Hallways
In many conventions and meetings, you find people in the halls chatting during the sessions. I’ve always thought that these were the people who felt they didn’t need what was going on in the rooms and that they had nothing left to learn. Some “held court” themselves with a handful of people on the couches. I find it highly arrogant.
That doesn’t occur in my major events. I think it’s partly because the speakers are so good and offer so much value, and partly because the people attending are in my community to some degree and they appreciate the opportunity presented to them over the course of the conference.
Some people have to step out for a legitimate business call, but everyone else is focused in the sessions. That’s an indication of their commitment to learning and their appreciation of why they’re there.
Attitudes
Your mindset needs to be, “How much can I squeeze out of this time and investment to maximize my return?” Presenters are obligated (at least in my view) to present information in an entertaining and dynamic manner. But they can’t make us learn. Our responsibility as attendees is to accept what’s being suggested and explore whether we can make it work for us to improve our business and our lives.
If we can’t, then we can at least say we tried. If we resist and are cynical, we have no right to say anything and we’re just wasting our time.
It’s relatively rare in this profession to encounter an event where you meet fabulous people, establish new relationships, and learn from what’s presented.
Make up your mind before you walk in the door.
