There's going to be a business Renaissance in the first half of this year. Are you going to be ready for it?

The coming business boom

There’s going to be a business Renaissance in the first half of this year. It will create a wave of prosperity for those prepared for it. But like any huge wave, if you don’t surf the crest you may be rolled about in the trough. My reasoning is this:

• The second disease surge will have ended.

• The vaccine will be more and more widely available.

• Small businesses will receive more stimulus money with a less divided Congress, and small businesses are the biggest generators of net, new jobs in North America.

• Strong industries and professions will continue to grow: health care, professional services, manufacturing, realty, finance.

• Boeing already has orders for the newly-approved 737 Max, as an example of resilience.

• Both strengths and weaknesses are exacerbated in crises, and there has been a “cleansing” of weaker businesses.

• People with Covid “cabin fever” will boost even the travel and hospitality industries as they purchase vacations and family gatherings.

• The stock market is full of confidence and continues to climb.

• People are saving money, realizing that having too little cash on hand was disastrous for individuals and businesses.

• Consumer spending is increasing, especially online.

• The presidential election is over and there will be a peaceful transfer of power to a new team.

I could go on, but you get the idea. The good thing about someone twisting your arm is that, when they stop, it feels so good.

Surfing and not drowning

Consequently, you need to adapt to the times, to paraphrase Machiavelli. Some changes will be permanent, e.g., remote meetings via Zoom and similar technologies. Some changes will not, e.g., remote workers in many industries are simply not highly productive.

Increasingly, we have independent consumers who are dictating the buying process, not dependent on salespeople or “middlemen.” Peer-to-peer referrals and evangelism are stronger factors than ever.

What are you doing to change what you have to change to provide unique value in volatile times? There will be no “return to the old” nor any set “new normal.” What there will be is ongoing disruption.

The question will be whether you are a disrupter or among the disrupted.
