I’ve read letters to the editor of newspapers urging consumers not to use automated cashier machines, but to use human cashiers in order to preserve their jobs. I recall taxi drivers and companies organizing protests in the streets to stop Uber from being admitted into a city. Where do you start with this nonsense? The Luddite movement in the 19 th Century is often misunderstood and misquoted as an example of trying to delay and thwart progress. But the people involved, who destroyed mechanized looms and such, were protesting against low wages, lower quality in the craft, and increasing unemployment. They didn’t oppose progress per se, but opposed it’s use to exploit workers and degrade working conditions. If you take a look today, major city taxi companies offer scheduling, GPS routing, clean and safe cabs (no more drivers eating or on cell phones), and a variety of other Uber-like features. Most stores with automated cashiers (like banks with automated teller machines) also have humans, and people have a choice. You can’t prevent progress because it provides too many benefits for so many people. Telehealth can exist beside actual doctor visits. Even in casinos, there is virtual gambling. No one is forcing you to use a driverless taxi or own an autonomous car. Despite cars and airplanes, we still have uses for horses, trains, and bikes. The issue today isn’t the rather pathetic attempts to save human tellers by refusing to use automated ones, but the need to re-educate, re-equip, and re-skill the workforce. I believe that can be done, starting in the schools (where “shop” classes are producing teenage welders who can demand $70,000 upon graduation), and not directing everyone toward college. We are entering an age of competence and not credential. Some competence will involve technology and AI, and some will involve human interaction and “high touch.” Stop trying to get a new hand or vainly hope a new one will be better. Play the hand you’re dealt. |
