Holiday Greetings! Maria and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. If you celebrate a different holiday or don’t acknowledge one at all, the Season’s Best from both of us. Families getting together, sharing meals, exchanging gifts, even getting a bit hammered and telling the old stories still one more time, are rich and treasured experiences. I don’t think you have to be religious or to be offended by religion to feel that family, love, tolerance, and forgiveness are vital, global, human traits. Enjoy yourself, make a donation to those less fortunate, and be appreciative for what you have. The best gift you can give yourself is to forgive yourself for whatever you may feel guilty about. We are imperfect but perfectly capable of improvement. |

There is a craving for “magic bullets.” Let’s face it. We all think about it or actually take action to acquire them. Magic bullets are those suggested remedies, cures, and corrections that will eliminate or at least ameliorate a chronic condition, physical or mental, large or small, male or female, real or illusory. I seldom encounter people with body odor that is, well, odious. Not in the gym, not on crowded lines to enter an event, not on airplanes. Yet we were swarmed online and in the media with promotion for deodorants for the entire body, including as they coyly stated, “down there.” Was this a reaction to a reality or a suggestion that you’re smellier than you realize and everyone else is too kind to mention it? These magic bullets can ricochet to hurt us: stupid, small metal rods to hold to our ears to cure tinnitus; pulsating machines to root out mucus for those chronically congested; “cures” for arthritis, overeating, hair loss, hair growth, lower back discomfort, and acne. Then there are the obligatory legal warnings, in small print, or narrated by a person you’d think was announcing the next port on a wonderful cruise. You may experience uncontrolled coughing, high fevers, diarrhea, disorientation, suicidal thoughts, and the desire to commit arson. Certainly, the risk of suicidal thoughts merits trying to stimulate hair growth. We’re obsessed with injections that can help with diabetes, weight control, kidney problems, blood pressure, almost anything else that ails us. And the hype and the advertising is directed at the consumer by “Ask your doctor about this,” not at the medical establishment. Okay, fine. The phrase “magic bullet” originated with Dr. Paul Ehrlich, the Nobel laureate, in 1907. It never materialized as a cure that “always hit its target,” but it did lead to Salvarsan, the first effective treatment for syphilis. |
