Boeing, Boeing, Gone?

Not all that long ago, GE was the darling of the Dow Jones and represented the essence of conglomerate strength, owning locomotive assembly plants, NBC, appliance companies, nuclear plant construction, credit operations, and more. But due to some awful leadership, the company was split into three separate organizations saddled with $65 billion in debt, and is no longer a “player” of any substance.

Today, Boeing is in endless trouble, from plane crashes, malfunctions, a space shuttle that couldn’t safely return astronauts and “stranding” them in the space station. Now they’re the target of a major strike, halting production.

Boeing is the largest US exporter with $28 billion in annual overseas sales, and represents .5% of the total US GDP. It’s failure, or even continuing troubles, could send seismic waves through the economy.

Football, Transfers, and Loyalty

College football now has a “transfer portal” whereby athletes can change colleges without penalty (e.g., waiting a year before they can play). One early consequence is that if the team has a lot of these transferred players, and the team does poorly, they will all leave again, looking for a better chance to improve their visibility to be drafted by the pros.

Hence, there is no school loyalty, no common team culture, and no institutional “DNA” to bind players together and fight through tough times.

The same applies to organizations. Even Tom Brady and Joe Montana needed good teams around them that could withstand bad times and recover. So do your clients.

Profundity

It’s bizarre how many people on social media publish some serious picture of someone they believe to be a great thinker with some quote attributed to them. First, quoting something profound doesn’t make you profound, and much of the profundity pales under modern circumstances. A great many philosophers and therapists are cited. But Freud, often cited for example, believed a woman is simply an incomplete man. That’s beyond superficial, it’s just stupid.

We should eschew trying to be seen as profound and focus on exhibiting common sense.

Musings

We’re accustomed to noise at rock concerts, football stadiums, airport runways. But what’s happening in restaurants, and airplanes, and clubs? It seems as if the decibel level is climbing mightily and deliberately.

Restaurants have eschewed noise deadening and absorbing fabrics and designs. Instead there are tables within centimeters of each other, bare walls, acoustic ceilings, and deafening voices. This is not generational. Everybody is screaming to be heard.

Recently, the server, standing at the table’s edge, had to lean over the table to tell us the specials. “Veal parm” sounded like “meal farm” and forget about the specials.

I find that at hotel pools, airline clubs, and on the planes themselves I’m forced to find out more about people around me than I’d ever care to know. On the Acela high speed train, I can hear someone on the phone in the rear clearly in the front of the car. It’s as if people feel a cell phone, being so small, demands extra volume to be heard.

I don’t think I’m an elitist to inform you that I don’t care about your political problems with your boss (and it sounds like your fault, anyway), your political positions, what you think of the Red Sox, or the inevitable squealing that goes on when a dozen women arrive en route to a bachelorette party.

In one candle-lit restaurant that was nonetheless loud enough to rival Mt. Etna erupting, a woman was screaming at me from about two tables away, as if I had somehow insulted her. She finally rose, halved the distance, and I made out, “Your menu is on fire!” I had dipped it into a candle.

“Thank you,” I mouthed.

People laugh today when I tell them I’ve “prepared” for a Zoom or live session. They know my speeches are mainly riffs, and that I never change a word or phrase when I’m writing my books. I'm an Old Cowhand...

We left the hotel in Delray Beach and found a free tram shuttle. I gave the driver the address of the restaurant where we had reservations. “It’s just around the block,” he said, gruffly.

“No,” I said, “I was told it was over the bridge, at least a quarter mile.”

“It’s around the corner!” he repeated.

My wife said, “Let’s not bother him, we can get an Uber.”

“GET IN!!” the man shouted. We did, sheepishly.

He made a U-turn, turned right at the corner, and pulled up at the restaurant in about 20 seconds. We were all silent.

We got out and I gave him a $5 tip. He shouted through the open window, “Do you think you can find your way back?!”
