Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/26/2026
A “generation” is defined both in terms of genealogy and of social cohorts. As an average, I’ll use 25 years. From the early 20th Century to today there are about seven generations existing concurrently in the US. Understandably, the various world views embraced within them can be considerably different.
When I see the “50 greatest horror movies of all time” and “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and the original “War of the Worlds” are not included, I’m assuming the opinion is of someone or some group under 60. The same with greatest songs, or plays, or athletic feats, or TV shows. While I was in Portugal recently the august New York Times listed the 30 greatest, living songwriters. A third I hadn’t heard of, and I actually wrote a letter to the editor expressing surprise that, apparently, Billy Joel had died while I was overseas, since he wasn’t included.
The general furor caused the Times, to its credit, to list another 30 most popular songwriters (Mr. Joel was high up on this one) and the list was, perhaps, 50 percent different, in the honoree and the position on the list.
We need to remember, in this age of everyone using others’ first names, of spam and scam, of fake news, and self-appointed “influencers” that people’s perspectives are rarely congruent and their worldviews sometimes shockingly different. Most of you have heard me say that few world events threaten me, my having lived through the Cuban Missile Crisis and momentary expectation of nuclear war.
We need to stop shouting, stop condemning, stop voting for disingenuous politicians who merely attack their opponents but have no positive plans of their own. My particular world view is that my eyes glaze over when I hear candidates for governor, mayor, Congress, schoolboards, dog wardens, and crossing guards tell me they’re going to protect me from Donald Trump.
What I need is safety on the streets, quality health care for all, better education for everyone, the elimination of bias and bigotry in public discourse, and politicians who arrange for balanced budgets by not spending so much trying to “buy” votes.
But, what the hell, that’s just my perspective.
