Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 6/4/12

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 6/4/12

June 4, 2012—Issue #141

This week’s focus point: John Santana recently pitched a no-hitter for the New York Mets, the first in their history. He did it with the help of a blown call by the third base umpire, who ruled a clearly fair ball (and base hit) to be foul. But that is the way of the world. If we work hard, do our best, and keep trying, we tend to draw some breaks and good luck. It’s a no-hitter in the record books, no asterisk, no retraction. In life and business, we sometimes get lucky, receive the benefit of the doubt, but the harder we work, the luckier we get. If you want breaks and good fortune, don’t just wait for them, work diligently at what you do and they will come. You can’t get any breaks if you’re not in the game.

Monday Morning Perspective: If you ever got good you’d be mediocre. –James Thurber

I remember a meeting with a boutique consulting firm that had fallen on hard times. The debate was whether or not to sell their magnificent conference table. “Where would clients sit?” asked one partner. “We have no clients,” stated the advocate of selling. You can’t cut your way to renewal or success. Top line growth is the key to bottom line achievement, for you and for your clients. Today is the time to invest in the future. Once you cut muscle, you’re powerless.
