Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/20/12

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/20/12

August 20, 2012—Issue #152

This week’s focus point: I meet far too many people who respond to a new idea or suggestion with, “Let me tell you how I do it,” or, “I disagree.” Their immediate response is to protect their own thinking patterns or try to prove they know more. These are people with sclerosis of the mind. Too many people don’t change because they’re afraid to admit they’re wrong or inefficient or ineffective. Strong people change all the time because they know that’s how they continue to improve. With whom are you associating daily? Are you with those who build moated castles to defend against intellect, or those who sally forth daily to find better ways? Only you can decide with whom you’ll ride. But even horses have the sense to follow those who move on to new pastures where food is more plentiful and the view changes.

Monday Morning Perspective: Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness. — James Thurber

I remember a meeting with a boutique consulting firm that had fallen on hard times. The debate was whether or not to sell their magnificent conference table. “Where would clients sit?” asked one partner. “We have no clients,” stated the advocate of selling. You can’t cut your way to renewal or success. Top line growth is the key to bottom line achievement, for you and for your clients. Today is the time to invest in the future. Once you cut muscle, you’re powerless.

I would add that many suffer from the “impostor syndrome” and panic when challenged.

I don’t always agree with you, Alan, but you make me think and evaluate my perspective on things (and sometimes you punch my right in the gut!). I always look forward to your posts.

Thanks. I don’t ask (or care) that people agree with me. I just want people to think and be provoked.
