Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/31/15
This week’s focus point: A question is a sign of interest. Whether in a meeting or addressing an audience, I’ve always welcomed questions. We’re then able to deal with real-time concerns, calibrate our progress, and gain insights. There are two positions inimical to this exchange. One is polarization, an increasingly insidious phenomenon, where “If you’re not with us, you’re against us.” That’s why there’s too little meaningful discussion about climate, abortion, political positions, gay rights, gun ownership, and so forth. The other position is apathy, a total lack of interest. (I find people comical who complain about government but concurrently “boast” that they never vote.) Polarization is actually a form of apathy, a complete lack of interest in views other than your own. All of us should be willing to ask and answer questions, because otherwise polarization shuts the door on reason.
