The Great Outdoors

The Great Outdoors

I took the dogs out this morning at 5:45 am for their walk in the yard. It was 10°. You know what I thought about, in the dark, watching my breath freeze in front of me? I was thinking of the firefighters, police officers, EMTS, sanitation people, airline ground crews, construction people, and all the others who have to work outside in this weather. And then we entered the warm truck in the garage and drove off for coffee, with my awareness of how fortunate I am.

My wife and I worked in a pen factory in North Bergen, NJ to earn money for college. In the summer, when we were employed, it was often above 100° in what was a true sweatshop, I had horrible allergies, and the two of us slogged through the day, bored and miserable. When I worked part time in the postal service, I was often out in the streets in the wind, rain, and snow, or in the August heat, when asphalt melted.

But I was in my teens and twenties back then. I can’t do that today, but what I can do today is to stop complaining about a little discomfort.
