Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat

In a densely populated inner city, we would trick or treat in apartment buildings and multi-family houses for hours, collecting candy and, most importantly, money. We went in small groups, crossed streets, dealt with people who told us to get lost, and thanked people who were kind. We never trashed anyone’s property, we just move on. Our parents didn’t feel the need to inspect our loot.

Now, in upscale suburban neighborhoods with private homes, I see parents escorting the kids with flashlights and in large groups.

Is this progress?
