Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 06/05/17
In the 14th Century, the “black death” is estimated to have killed about 50% of the population of Europe. Today, we’re watching the deliberate depopulation of indigenous Europeans in numbers not reached for nearly 800 years (and back then caused by incurable plague).
The cause today is mundane but serious: The mortality rate in Europe exceeds the birth rate, and has for many years. The US manages to repopulate itself (there are only two small states where deaths exceed births) and to grow. But Europe is facing a huge need for imported labor that will be non-European (probably largely Muslim) that will profoundly change the nature of Europe in the next generation.
Whether that is “good” or “bad” or neither is up to you. I’ve found that organizations die without “new blood,” be they social clubs, civic initiatives, or enterprises (zero attrition is never good). That also includes circles of friends, as I’ve written in Lifestorming with Marshall Goldsmith.
The new and the old in healthy combination is the best way to grow a business and a life. In so doing, you can’t expect that things will always be the same, and you have to appreciate that they shouldn’t be. As Billy Joel says, “The good old days weren’t all that good and tomorrow ain’t as bad as it seems” (Keeping the Faith © Universal Music Publishing Group).
It’s a good idea to ask ourselves to what degree we’re sustaining what works well and to what degree we’re replacing what doesn’t.
Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. —John F. Kennedy
