Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/19/2026
Thoughts Not Best Left Unsaid:
• The unspoken land mines awaiting Mayor Mamdani and other socialist office holders at all levels is that no matter how bold they attempt to be in their reforms (or revolution ) they are constrained by the law, by popular opinion, by opposing media, and by the traditions and values of the country. But that is not true for their supporters who, with no such constraints on their behavior, will protest and riot for their cause. They’ve already called the mayor a traitor for not sufficiently ignoring the horrors of the Hamas Oct. 7 attacks in his public statements (which overwhelmingly focus on the Palestinians).
• You can strangle on platitudes. “There is no ‘I’ in ‘team’” may be literally correct, but the great teams overwhelmingly have rallied around one or two great stars: Tom Brady, Lionel Messi, Micky Mantle, Simone Biles, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Caitlin Clark. These superstars don’t just perform well, they give teammates confidence they can win in any situation (Brady being down by 25 points midway through the third quarter of a Super Bowl and winning in overtime).
• The greatest “Catch22” of modern political times is that we desperately need term limits to provide new, young blood in Congress, yet the only people who can make that happen are those who are the beneficiaries of not having it. It’s like putting wolves on the committee to safeguard sheep.
• Once upon a time it was “We are the Cadillac of our business,” implying absolute quality. Then it was Mercedes. Now it’s Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls. The “high place” requires that you continue to climb, not sit on you laurels. Losing these exeplar metaphors is akin to losing a billion dollars a year in free advertising. Will Rogers said, “Even if you’re on the right track, if you’re not moving someone will pass you by.” Miller Beer once had a huge advertising campaign where actors paused and said, “It's Miller Time!” The problem was that actual beer drinkers said, “It's Miller Time, let's have a Bud!!” FYI: I'm not hearing or seeing “We're the Tesla of our business.”)
