Agendaists

Agendaists

I received an email this morning taking me to task for writing my Monday Morning Memo® about the Olympics and not mentioning the nuclear meltdown that Japan endured years ago. He said he was an “exposure scientist,” yet had no PhD or other credentials that I could discern.

There are people who look at the world through a single lens. Everything is about their “cause,” be it abortion, immigration, vaccination, social justice, animal rights, income redistribution, conservatism, liberalism, socialism, or whatever. The same applies to professionals, who often walk in to a client and start with the belief that the top person must be at fault, or reengineering is needed, or good to great has to be the philosophy, or “lean,” or “agile,” or the enterprise must be “customer driven.” These are agenda-driven people: agendaists.

These are narrow people, with a singular belief system that infects everything else in their lives. It’s not that some of the causes aren’t just and important, it’s that they can’t be the subject of every conversation and every waking moment or they’re trivialized.

Of course it’s a free country and I informed my “scientist” reader that he was free not to read the newsletter.

I agree, Alan. I hear about ‘agendaists’ from clients all the time. For example, they tell me about hiring an ad agency, and it didn’t work. They then hired a public relations agency, and it didn’t work… and so on. When I look further into these situation, it appears that each agency (in this case) tried to ‘force’ their set of solutions to solve problems that might require a completely different solution or a set of solutions.

Your post today reminded me of what I tell those clients: “If their only tool is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail to them”. This is the root problem of agendaists — they have limited set of tools, and they often lack the ability to think beyond them.
