Of Course You Drive at 100 MPH on the Interstate, I Did!

Of Course You Drive at 100 MPH on the Interstate, I Did!

“Projection” is the psychological need to assume my strengths and weaknesses are also yours. If I tell you not to try the medium hills when you first begin to ski, it’s because I couldn’t and I therefore assume you can’t, either. Why should you be better than I was? But if I had done it, I’ll mock you for not doing it: “Come on, it’s easy, just give it a try!”

Don’t listen. This kind of advice will deny you the opportunity to try some things that you should try, and also urge you to try some things that may be inappropriate or even dangerous.

Use your own metrics, not the other person’s.
