Pretend Power

Pretend Power

Some of the worst bureaucracy and most blatant exercises of “power” are by people who are actually powerless, but grasp at what control they may have to make others' lives miserable. They pretend not to see you and to make you wait. They demand information they don't need. They create waiting periods that are unnecessary. These are people terribly unhappy in their jobs who, instead of leaving or trying to better themselves, take out their frustrations on customers.

In other words, they're not happy until you're not happy.

Don't argue, don't threaten, but do give them praise, ask for their help. comment on their knowledge. I'm not being noble here. This will speed you along to your goals, but also deny them the pleasure in thwarting your plans or delaying your request. If you don't show your frustration, their source of pleasure disappears and they might as well fulfill your request and get rid of you. Perhaps they can spoil the next person's day.

I'm convinced that toxic workplaces are caused by toxic employees who can't or won't put in the work to improve their performance and be successful.
