Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 12/9/13

December 9, 2013—Issue #220

This week’s focus point: We were on the way home from Nantucket and grabbed a quick meal for the grandchildren and ourselves at a drive-through MacDonald’s, not something I regularly do. In addition to the usual erratic speaker, the order taker had such a strong accent that I couldn’t understand her. It took several tries to get the order right, and even then we realized she omitted the fries we had paid for as we drove away. I noticed there were five cars waiting in line behind me that curled around the building. Why would you place someone in a job requiring rapid communication skills who doesn’t have complete command of the language? I heard other employees speaking perfect English at the window. The point, I’d think, is to have minimally acceptable job standards and help everyone who aspires to achieve them, but not to place them before achieved. What minimum standards may you be ignoring or missing? For example, without marketing skills, you won’t make it as an independent consultant.

Monday Morning Perspective: Very nice, but there are dull stretches. — Antoine de Riverol, critiquing a two-line poem.
