Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 8/3/26
This is the beginning of our final week in Nantucket, and our “east coast” family is with us: daughter, son-in-law, twin 17-year-old granddaughters. The beach is 20 yards across the backyard with a private staircase, and the heated pool and jacuzzi to my left (looking at the ocean) across the side lawn.
It is fiendishly expensive to come here. We dined at a new steak restaurant the other night and I said in my very favorable review, “This place is expensive even for Nantucket!” It’s a small island and you know that the fellow visitors you meet here have all “made it.”
I tell you this here because our lives included a strategy for the attainment of financial independence, the creation of significant discretionary time, and the belief in prosperity. This last factor is “oxygen mask principle,” wherein you can’t adequately help others unless you help yourself. That means you don’t adopt some false “humility” but rather work to establish credibility, and be willing to take prudent risk.
We need to take responsibility for our own improvement, not attempt to evade accountability and blame setbacks on the “system,” the boss, the government, the fates. It’s not what happens to you, it’s what you do about it.
The vital question, especially as you age, is, “Whom do you want to be?” You’re simply living in a snapshot of today while also engaged in a long-term movie. You’re the director. What role will you be playing in the future? It shouldn't be merely an extension of where you are now.
I was re-watching the great Tom Hanks film about women baseball professionals, “A League of Their Own.” The great line comes when he admonishes them, “There is no crying in baseball!!”
There is no ignoring our responsibility to create a productive existence for our family and ourselves. This is what my friend Randy Gage calls “significance.” I was sitting on the beach this morning completely alone at 8 am. And I realized once again that I’ve only been able to help so many others by trying to lead a significant life.

We took the Eurostar train from London to Paris. To my surprise, the large area at the end of the (first class, no less) car had a slot for a Euro on the racks in order to pull across a locking strap to prevent theft of the luggage. On the train (again, first class) from Porto to Lisbon there was no such offer of protection, despite several stops.
I felt safer about my possession on the train in Portugal.
