Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/16/17

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/16/17

My life became much easier many years ago when I learned that I can’t force anyone else to learn. I stopped judging my success based on everyone’s immediate application of my coaching or whether they liked me or not!

What I can do, and quite well, is create environments in which people are most apt to learn and choose to apply themselves in so doing. Epistemologically, we find that individual accountability and environment are essential. Just ask Newton or the Wright Brothers. And that’s why so many of us find so much of school so boring—it’s not that we’re “slow” or uninterested, it’s that we’re bored by ineffective instructors and horrible environments.

I see my responsibility as positioning learning as fun, relevant, aesthetic, and immediately applicable. I don’t deal in theory, but rather instantiate what people need to be successful. After that, it’s up to the individual. Marshall Goldsmith and I have often discussed the fact that if we’ve been able to help one person who really wants to be helped, that’s a success. And to quote another colleague and one of the giants in this field, Robert Mager, “You really oughta wanna.”

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. —Benjamin Franklin
