Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 12/09/2024
Somewhere around 1970, living somewhere we couldn’t afford, my wife and I decided to take a trip to Europe, which we couldn’t afford. I made hotel reservations solely in Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome, figuring out on a map the distances and winging it between those destinations. There was no GPS, and we rented a VW bug at the Amsterdam Airport after our charter flight. The trip to Rome and back was 2,050 driving miles.
Some of you have probably never driven in strange lands using a paper map, and when we arrived on the outskirts of Paris we had no idea how to get to the hotel. (Just what is an arrondissement?) At a light, not able to read any street signs, we asked a motorist stopped next to us. He tried French, then Spanish, then shook his head and indicated we should follow him. After 30 minutes we were at our obscure (viz.: “cheap”) hotel, and he had gone considerably out of his way according to the hotel desk clerk. This was simple kindness, not divine preterition.
I never forgot that wonderful generosity, and have tried to emulate it when I could, no matter how imperfectly. So one day at Newark Airport, Maria and I went to the parking lot after landing to our 450 SLC (we weren’t “on the cheap” anymore), which had a back seat that might have held a box of donuts. A Japanese couple came running up to us, pointing at their tickets and desperately trying to signal what was needed. The tickets revealed they had 20 minutes to catch their connection in another terminal.
They crowded into the rear with four pieces of luggage completely obscuring them, and we hustled over to get them to the terminal with five minutes to spare. (No security then and they’d check even big bags at the gate.)
Years later in another airport, I was making a business call on a public phone using my AT&T credit card (again, a museum piece for a lot of you). A British gentleman, with a handful of American and British change, asked me how to make a call to his brother in Baltimore. I finished my call, used my credit card to call his number, and when his brother answered I gave the man the phone. He said to his wife, “Americans! Can you beat that? They’re all rich!”
I have my share of failures to be aware of these opportunities and help, but at least I’m trying. If we all did, the world would probably be a better place. You know, if you let someone turn in traffic ahead of you, and you get upset if you’re not thanked by the other driver, you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
