Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 12/11/17

Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 12/11/17

Depending on the source you consider, what I’ll dangerously call the “Christmas Season” generates something like $650 billion in spending in the US economy. About three-quarters of that is in the purchase and exchange of gifts. One hundred percent increases are usual in businesses such as bookstores, and almost two hundred percent in jewelry stores. Seasonal businesses, from Christmas Cards (two billion) to Christmas trees (21 million) are wholly dependent. Many retailers earn two-thirds of their profits in the fourth quarter and two-thirds of those in December.

No matter what one’s religion or non-belief in religion, the season is festive. It has become secular in its traditions, joy, and family celebrations. (When I read at midnight mass this year, the church will be overflowing with many people we only see then and at Easter!)

My point, however, isn’t to convert anyone or establish anything other than this: Let’s be kind to each other. You don’t need a religious creed or particular edifice to practice kindness—as opposed to polarization, as opposed to shouting down those with whom we disagree, as opposed to assuming every irritating act was designed to specifically hurt us personally. This is a time of year when people listen to different music, so why not behave with a different rhythm? We’re going to be with family, we’re going to share bread, we’re going to look both backward and forward. Isn’t a reasonable and practical common ground to be found in just being kind to others?

‘Tis the season.

When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. —Tecumseh
