Who says we’re polarized and can’t come together? We’re certainly together on rooting for certain teams, prognosticating about outcomes, and (for many) betting on sporting events. You’re reading this probably the day after the Super Bowl in the US, which is expected to draw at least 120 million viewers (about the same as last year’s) and is the most viewed show on television. (The final episode of MASH drew about 106 million.)
(I’m just curious, for those who want to watch, on their big-screen TV, the game itself, the commercials, and the much-vaunted halftime show, when do they, uh, manage a “break”?)
People will be at parties, in bars, or at home with the family, watching the action, with color commentary from the GOAT himself, seven-time Super Bowl winner, and most expensive sportscaster in the media ($390 million), Tom Brady.
We do tend to come together for sports, entertainment, recreation, vacations, charities, and disasters (California fires, aircraft collision at Reagan Airport, floods, earthquakes, terror attacks). We are really not “single issue” people. I can disagree with you politically, agree on sports, choose different vacation preferences, but like the same restaurants. We don’t despise each other or feel the other is morally inferior just because I like uni and you don’t.
Life is short, we need to bring out the best in each other, not seek our perception of the worst in each other. I really don’t find that so hard to ask or do.
My wife is a Chiefs fan, loves Mahomes, and I’m fed up with Kelce and Taylor Swift.
