Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 3/2/26

I read a story on Fox News Saturday, accompanied by a video (or I might not have believed it), about a Turkish soccer player who inadvertently hit a seagull with his kick. The bird fell about 10 feet to earth.
The player quickly ran to the bird, gently turned it over, and began a kind of avian CPR, gently creating compressions on the bird’s chest. Players gathered around, and the referee stopped the game. After about a minute, the bird was clearly conscious, and the player rushed it off the field to someone waiting to take it out of the stadium and, I’d presume, to medical care.
The player’s team ultimately lost the game, but a spokesperson said, “We’re happy a life was saved.”
A life. In the midst of warfare in six parts of the world that readily come to mind, an animal’s life was saved because a man thought it was the right thing to attempt in that moment.
For all the talk about strategy and the future and landing people on the moon again (and then Mars), we need to perform the “right” acts in the moment in which we find ourselves. I’ve found that truly ethical conduct exists not where it’s obvious, but where no one else is around to notice it, or when others wonder if they should intercede. (You wonder if someone other than you will give their seat to the elderly person standing on the train.) The individual’s own gyroscope—moral compass, perhaps—reveals what’s right. (We in the US saw the lack of that and opposite behavior exemplified by both parties in the recent State of the Union address.)
It’s not about sending a check when it's convenient, its' about acting when you can make an immediate difference.
The greatest leadership trait I’ve observed in all of my career working with the highest level people in powerful organizations is not anything mentioned on all those ludicrous charts, lists, graphs, and aphorisms on Linkedin.
It’s generosity.
