Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 4/4/16
“House of Cards,” about an unethical president and his wife (Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in amazing performances), has created “binge watching,” where people are glued to Netflix for 13 consecutive episodes once or twice a year. Every time Donald Trump opens his mouth, it’s front-page news—the more controversial, the better. We still wonder what happened to D.B. Cooper in 1971, when he hijacked an airplane and parachuted out of it with a large ransom.
Bonnie and Clyde are the subjects of books, plays, and movies. Whitey Bulger is still big news in Boston, captured on murder charges after eluding police for 16 years. Lance Armstrong, guilty of illegal activity to win his bike races, and of intimidating others to lie for him, forfeiting all of those victories, is, of course, on the lecture circuit.
Naturally, we’re outraged when we’re the victim of identify theft, or an email scam, or someone hitting our car and then speeding away. Yet we often fail to have sympathy or even empathy for other victims as we, uninvolved, observe somewhat dispassionately from the stands.
We seem to love our disrupters, but hate the disruption, are fascinated by the criminals while hating the crime. That seems to me to be a torturous dichotomy.
Claims made by scientists, in contrast to claims made by movie critics or theologians, can be separated from the scientists who make them. It isn’t important to know who Isaac Newton was. He discovered that force is equal to mass times acceleration. He was an antisocial, crazy bastard who wanted to burn down his parents’ house. But force is still equal to mass times acceleration.
