Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 02/14/11

February 14, 2011—Issue #74

This week’s focus point: “Don’t be defensive” is an overused admonition. It’s okay to be defensive about your values and beliefs when they are threatened. It’s fine to be defensive when someone is giving you unsolicited feedback who has no credentials to provide it and/or has malicious intent. It’s appropriate to be defensive when you’re slandered. Teams play offense and defense. Don’t allow the false stigma of being “defensive” to turn you into a punching bag. And, of course, bear in mind that the best defense is a strong offense.

Monday Morning Perspective: He who doesn’t turn runs far. — Chinese proverb

I remember a meeting with a boutique consulting firm that had fallen on hard times. The debate was whether or not to sell their magnificent conference table. “Where would clients sit?” asked one partner. “We have no clients,” stated the advocate of selling. You can’t cut your way to renewal or success. Top line growth is the key to bottom line achievement, for you and for your clients. Today is the time to invest in the future. Once you cut muscle, you’re powerless.
