Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/25/13

November 25, 2013—Issue #218

This week’s focus point: I’ve just returned from a trip that included Beijing, where I saw people stopped arbitrarily and asked for identification, security is forbiddingly militaristic, crowds create pushing and shoving (population of 25 million), and people seemed to me to be resigned more than enthusiastic. There is great wealth, a rich culture, fine food, and freedom of movement for Americans. But the air is almost unbreathable (you can smell, see, and taste it every day) and the mood is generally grey. I wish them the best because a rising middle class doesn’t want to lose the life that has been earned. But it puts thing in perspective back home when TSA takes ten minutes or the department of motor vehicles isn’t responsive.

Monday Morning Perspective: I will play Stockhausen only on two conditions. One, there will be no rehearsal and two, the performance is conducted at gunpoint. — Flautist James Galway on his contempt for avant-garde composers.
