Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 1/14/13

January 14, 2013—Issue #173

This week’s focus point: Sports are indeed a metaphor for life. The Denver Broncos, with one of the best quarterbacks in history, lost their playoff game because the coach tried not to lose rather than to win. He minimized his risks instead of seeking opportunity. The Baltimore Ravens, coming from behind continually, won in overtime. We are successful by building on strengths, not shoring up weaknesses; by taking prudent risk in the hope of significant rewards (small downside, huge upside); and by realizing, as Churchill did, that success is never final and failure rarely fatal–it’s courage that counts.

Monday Morning Perspective: To become a successful philosopher king, it is better to start as the king than as the philosopher. — Nassim Taleb in “Antifragile”
