Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 5/21/12

May 21, 2012—Issue #139

This week’s focus point: Stop worrying about correcting your flaws, which is what most self-help books pontificate about. We grow by building on strengths. Certainly, correct critical weaknesses, such as not knowing how to use silverware or being unable to read a financial statement. But don’t worry that your speaking, writing, socializing, networking, marketing, and so on can always be improved according to some expert. I can improve in all of those areas myself, but I’d rather focus on my best strengths because they will get me farther and are much more fun to engage in. Steve Jobs had horrible social and interpersonal skills throughout his life, yet he was continually able to produce exciting, practical, innovative products which turned customers into evangelists. I’d hate to think that spending a lot of time on being more patient in meetings might have distracted from the development of the iPad!

Monday Morning Perspective: Primum non nocere. (Above all, do no harm.)

I remember a meeting with a boutique consulting firm that had fallen on hard times. The debate was whether or not to sell their magnificent conference table. “Where would clients sit?” asked one partner. “We have no clients,” stated the advocate of selling. You can’t cut your way to renewal or success. Top line growth is the key to bottom line achievement, for you and for your clients. Today is the time to invest in the future. Once you cut muscle, you’re powerless.
