This week’s focus point: A quarter century ago, Larry Wilson, founder of Wilson Learning, told me he loved to be surrounded by books, because he felt more creative and productive merely by being in their presence. Okay, I thought, but I’m also reading the books! Today, I do surround myself with bright, creative, and risk-accepting people who challenge me to help them and surprise them. The key is never to be threatened by intellect and success, but rather to surround yourself with it and bask in it. Marshall Goldsmith told me once that the best way to be a thought leader is to hang out with thought leaders, and that he had personally carried Peter Drucker’s briefcase for quite a while. Don’t wait for bright people to show up. Seek them out, provide them with value, and enable them to attract still more talent to your universe. We grow best by helping others who are already darn good.
