Brother, Can You Spare A Dime!

Brother, Can You Spare A Dime!

I’ve received hundreds of texts over the past 60 days—all of which I’ve then blocked—begging for money for elections, a third of which come from out of state, asking me to help in New Mexico or Montana. I think it’s because I’ve given money at times to local Democratic candidates and they have exchanged (or sold) their lists. About 99% of the requests are from Democratic candidates. It seems they’re all former Eagle Scouts, seal team members, teachers, decorated service members, and “reformers.” (I thought we elected the reformers last time, I guess not.) They all want to turn the page, even though many were on that same page until now.

They want a buck, spare change, anything in my pocket, because that will make the difference in a tight election with their opponent, Ming the Merciless. They all want to “protect me from Trump.” I’m no Trump fan, but what I need protection from is unsafe streets, unregulated immigration, inflation, waste, and war. I’d like the coasts protected and the mail delivered on time.

It seems every crossing guard and librarian is seeking to “protect me from Trump” instead of getting the kids safely across the street and the books in their proper order.

I’m not too worried about dishonest candidates, or corruption, or polarization.

I am worried about the sheer stupidity and banality of people who want power, try to gain it by blaming and attacking others, and have nothing new to say to their constituency and their needs.

I’m going to vote, but I’m weary of holding my nose to do so.
