Gershwin, Picasso, Steinbeck–All Awful

Gershwin, Picasso, Steinbeck–All Awful

The New York Times seldom publishes letters critical of its viewpoint of that of its columnists. Recently, a self-described “musician, composer, and writer” wrote a mean-spirited critique of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. This is what we’ve come to—let’s undermine any valuable contribution to our culture to shine glory on the critic.

“The Worst Masterpiece” by Ethan Iverson, employing “corny and Caucasian” in critique of Gershwin’s exquisite Rhapsody in Blue (which, unfortunately for Iverson, the public seems to adore) is part of the current arts genre where people attempt to gain greater glory for themselves by attacking those who have already achieved greater glory. But, given the times, I guess the next step is to tear down any George Gershwin statues we can find and remove his name from public structures.
