Keeping It Simple

Keeping It Simple

I was the graduation speaker once at a university’s Executive MBA commencement. The dean caught up with me afterwards and told me he had never seen anyone take notes at a commencement address before, and a lot of the people taking notes were the parents.

“How do you stimulate that?” he asked.

“I’m not here about me,” I told him, “I’m here about them. So I think of things they can use tomorrow that are pragmatic and immediately applicable, not some platitudes and certainly not my agenda about society.”

“That sounds so simple,” he marveled, and waked away.

What we need is more simplicity and less complexity.
