New York Looks Broken

New York Looks Broken

The Amtrak train from Boston to Providence was late (a 20 minute trip from its origin that took it nearly 30) and no announcement was made. First class was jammed full. At New Rochelle, all power was lost. But, it was restored in less than 10 minutes.

We were 25 minutes late into Penn Station, but Amtrak could not get the train doors to open. (What on earth backup do they use in an emergency??) A conductor finally figured out a manual override. We went up to our limo, only to run into the Polish Pride Parade (I’m a quarter Polish), inexplicably being conducted up Fifth Avenue, effective stopping cross-town traffic for extended periods. It took over 30 minutes to get from Penn Station on 31st to the Grand Hyatt on 42nd.

Throughout the traffic gridlock, platoons of police stood around doing nothing but watching traffic, doing zero to expedite it in any way.

Where’s Rudy Giuliani when you need him? (Maybe I’ll see him later this week at the cigar club we both belong to and where I occasionally run into him.)

I realize that New York City and Amtrak are separate entities, so spare me the lecture. I’m just saying: I love this city, and it’s not measuring up at the moment.
