Oscar Crawl #7: Marty Supreme

Oscar Crawl #7: Marty Supreme

This film is based on the life of Marty Reisman an actual table tennis hustler and excellent player. It takes a lot of liberties with the actual story (e.g., there was never a Gwyneth Paltrow-type in his life, and the character here, a fading actress, being intimate with Timothée Chalamet, is implausible to say the least, nor is she very effective in the role), but Reisman was a selfish, lying, amoral person who was winning tournaments into his 70s, though the film ends well before that. For me, the highlight was his battle with Japanese champion Koto Endo post-war, played by an actual Japanese champion, Koto Kawaguchi. The film is breaking financial records for Studio A24. The critics love it and predict Chalamet will win the Oscar (in addition to awards already won).

While the original subject is fascinating enough (and Chalamet is excellent) the film goes WAY over the top in his ability to get into jams and escape, to bamboozle otherwise smart businessmen and family, and to get away with illegal and unethical behavior. The table tennis scenes are terrifically shot and, incredibly, Chalamet trained for seven years, and there is no stunt double. For all of that, the film tries to make a larger-than-life cad even larger, and fails. This is another overrated film. It's a fast-paced look at a raving narcissist. Despite overall critical praise, it received zero BAFTA awards from 11 nominations.

I'm rating this below Hamnet and Frankenstein, but nothing thus far, with three films left, has hugely impressed me.
