Oscar Crawl: The Sinners

Oscar Crawl: The Sinners

Movie crawl continues with Sinners. This racked up a million Oscar nominations, features Michael B. Jordon playing brothers in the same scenes, and vampires. It's basically a hugely heavy metaphor of race inequity set in 1932. There are funny lines, terrific music, paranormal experiences, the Klan, and vampires (who are, of course, white). It's a sharecroppers' existence and the audience is clobbered with race inequities of a century ago. (Inexplicably, in the midst of hugely effective high tech, some of the auto scenes are shot in front of a fake,  moving backdrop which is crazily out of place). There is also the total implausibility of the “Juke Joint” the two brothers, who are crooks, set up.

This film is a massive box office success, and the critics love it. The music is wonderful, the scenes gory and hugely bloody, and the progress predictable. I think it will win a lot of awards—the cinematography is excellent as is all the acting of even the most minor characters. But I feel as though I was dragged through a guilt trip that I've been exposed to repeatedly with the apparent attempt to shed a lot of that blood on the viewers.

Match Point: My wife and I agree.
