Respect vs. Affection

Respect vs. Affection

Whether to go forward with a new initiative is ultimately, a leader’s decision. But if that’s turned into a consensus decision relying on subordinates to “buy in” to the decision, very little will get done. Weak leaders want to be liked, strong leaders create respect.

The same phenomenon applies to people on stage. Some speakers want to be liked and receive ovations and high marks on feedback sheets. They will never challenge an audience. But strong speakers provoke people to think differently and explore new approaches.
