Episode IV

Buying Time

We use the phrase “buying time” usually to denote trying to delay an event so that it’s further into the future. “We filed an extension to buy time until our tax forms are due.” “He managed to buy time with a bridge loan in order to delay withdrawing from his IRA and suffering a penalty.”

We’re not really “buying” anything, merely kicking the can down the road. I’m talking here about quite literally buying time in order to increase discretionary time—time entirely up to us in terms of how it’s spent. (And notice that we readily talk about “spending” time with a friend or with a hobby, just as in spending money.)

When we hire a cleaning company for our homes, or pay someone to wash the car, or ask our travel agent to pursue flights and hotels to give us options, or invest in a company to paint the house, we are buying time by spending money to have others do things for us for which they are highly qualified, thus allowing us to pursue family time, hobbies, travel (yes, and even work) as we so choose. It is immaterial whether or not we could do the job ourselves.

It’s not just for requisite skills demanded to fix a leak on the roof or clean the fireplace. It’s also for smaller issues, such as having your shoes shined, the car cleaned, or a yard mulched. Would you rather spend 20 minutes looking for a parking space and then walking six blocks to the restaurant, or giving the valet a tip to take your car at the door and bring it back there again?

We have to maintain the courage of out talent to realize that we’re successful to the point of abandoning poverty and scarcity mentalities and replacing them with abundance mentalities. The question, “How much is enough?” in terms of income can be answered with the evaluation of whether you have sufficient means to buy the time you need for family, interests, career, education, community involvement, and so forth

Esteem is about appreciating that your inherent worth and contributions deserve sufficient time to improve the lives of yourself and others. To me, there’s simply no issue, no question of the intelligence of “buying time.”

Because I can always make another dollar, but I can’t make another minute.
