The Dog Star: Efficiency

The Dog Star: Efficiency

(The Dog Star is a symbol of power, will, and steadfastness of purpose, and exemplifies the One who has succeeded in bridging the lower and higher consciousness. –Astrological Definition)

Bentley barks at every single vehicle that comes up the driveway, barks every time the bridge alarm goes off. He’ll even do this with friends and family and cars he knows. He doesn’t take any chances about missing anyone and only calms down when he recognizes the person or the UPS guy gives him biscuits.

Bentley is highly effective at his job, but not very efficient.

An Air Force colonel, looking at me skeptically since he didn’t feel he needed a consultant but the brigadier general did, told me, “If you want us to destroy a city, we need to send more planes than we think we’ll need, because effectiveness trumps efficiency.”

You and I aren’t destroying cities or awaiting vehicles on the property. Our clients, as well as we, need to do things effectively and efficiently. Streamline whatever you can. Don’t  use six steps when three will suffice.

That’s why rigid methodologies and insistence on protocols make no sense. They’re triumphs of means over ends—bureaucracies.
