What If Dostoyevsky, Nietzsche, and Sartre Walked Into A Bar….

What If Dostoyevsky, Nietzsche, and Sartre Walked Into A Bar….

We tend to throw around the term “existential” as if it means “theoretical” or “ambiguous” or “esoteric.” But the term means “relating to existence.” Dismissing issues relating to climate change, for example, as “existential,” as incorrectly defined by the first three terms above, is an oxymoron. Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Gabriel Marcel are examples of leading thinkers in the discipline. Basically, this philosophy believes that external forces such as God, government, and nature do not control our lives but we control out own lives in our decisions and behaviors.

We can debate climate change, or immigration, or abortion, or other moral dilemmas of out times honestly and intellectually. But to simply relegate the argument as “existential”with the wrong definition is the worst kind of arrogant reaction: dismissive.
