Fish Story

Fish Story

Two young fish are swimming together, and they come upon an older fish going in the other direction.

“Hi, boys,” says the older fish, “how do you like the water today?”

The two fish swim a few more yards, then stop and look at each other and ask, “What’s ‘water’?”

We seem to take a lot for granted or don’t ask questions about our lives and environment and universe. Consequently, when the water is tainted or even disappears, the fish don’t understand what’s happened. That’s what happened to us in the pandemic, and prior health disasters. (No one at the time knew that plague was caused by mosquitos traveling on rodents. About a quarter of the population of London died as a result.)

We need to stop spending so much time looking at the past in nostalgia, and the future in anticipation, but rather at the present with deeper understanding and concern.
