Vulgarity causes a decline in society. There’s a difference between being bold and simply being crude. If you’re relying on vulgar phrases and words to produce shock value, you need to re-evaluate what you’re doing.

    Alan,

Thanks for writing this. A few months ago, an uncomfortable truth for me was finding myself spewing the f-bomb more than I was eating meals (Is that a metaphor?). I was listening to (and reading) a best-selling author who founded a cool aviation company for folks who want to fly privately.

I love the guy, he provides a lot of value, yet the language was off the charts, which is fine, but when I started cursing in front of family for “effect,” I realized how stupid I became and decided to fly elsewhere and better yet, “charter my own motivational plane!”

Sadly the use of vulgar language in pubic environments is another glaring example of the general “vulgarization” of our society. Behaviors that were considered taboo in past generations have now become accepted, and in some cases, admired. From excessive cursing in public, to cell phone conversations and playing You Tube videos loudly in restaurants, movie theaters and commercial aircraft, people are subjected to vulgarisms on a daily basis. It is especially frustrating in my personal life as my wife and I spend a lot of time trying to guide our children to be courteous members of society, yet feeling like we are swimming upstream as our children see the behaviors of other children that lead to continued vulgarism.
