Everyone is selling techniques, books, courses, and magic potions on social media about how to obtain leads. “Guaranteed to generate 100 leads a week!” The only thing these people have “sold” themselves, of course, is the dumb approaches they’re hawking.

So let me make this simple, and charge you nothing. (When people ask me on occasion why it took me several years to make my first million annually and why it wasn’t more, I tell them they have an advantage I never had: I wasn’t able to read Million Dollar Consulting.)

There are two kinds of leads in any business: solicited (you create them by asking for them) and unsolicited (they come to you because they’ve heard of you, also known as branding). Both are vital, and you “control” them both, the first by asking for them (and not feeling “unworthy”) and the second by doing good work and publicizing it (and not feeling you ought to be more “humble”).

But most importantly, when people notice you in either case, you need to be saying something provocative, important, relevant, and immediately useful. Everyone is sick of hearing about AI and how Chicken Little should be president. Being derivative is close to being a plagiarist: The Eight Dysfunctions of Teams, or $1.5 Million Dollar Consulting.

Ask yourself, “What are the key issues of our times for my ideal clients?” Are they supply chain, technology, attrition, global sales, remote sales, strategy? Then say something people have to think about, for example: Don’t immediately replace a key departure because you may be hiring for yesterday and not tomorrow. Apple is moving its supply chain from halfway around the world to their backyard, should you? (They’re going to make their own chips.) There are far more toxic employees than toxic workplaces.

You get the idea. You need to stand out in a crowd, but you need to look good while you’re standing there. (I said that out loud at a meeting at Prudential when I was hired right out of undergraduate school. I was fast-tracked to management. I’ve never stopped trying to provoke people to think differently.) It's not that hard. Never conflate “simplistic” (overly simple responses to truly complex issues) with “simple” (easily understood and resolved).
