Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 6/1/26

This is a story and forecast not just for the US, but for virtually all developed nations.
Population growth has already slowed to a crawl. Since 2020, the U.S. population has increased by an average of 0.6% per year, about a third of the pace during the 1950s, in the middle of the 1946-1964 baby boom that gave the “Boomer” generation its nickname. I am in the eldest cohort of the Boomers.
Something like 70% of the non-liquid assets of US citizens are owned by Boomers, because they have had monetary reserves, the benefit of IRA legislation, houses with little or no mortgage remaining, and a disinclination to “downsize.” When social security was enacted over 80 years ago, there were about 14 people working for every retired person (typically at 65) and the average lifespan was 68. Today, the average lifespan is 76 for men and 81 for women, and there are about two people working for every retired person.
The succeeding GenX’s oldest members are in their early 60s. In about five or so years, there will be more people over 65 than children in the U.S., which is unprecedented. English-speaking white people will be a plurality in the U.S., but not a majority. There are about 400 languages currently spoken in the U.S., making it perhaps the most diverse linguistic country in the world.
My town is spending tens of millions on its largest-ever public works initiative, to build and modernize schools. Schools which will not be needed. There is a shortage of both pediatric and geriatric doctors, but the need for the latter will quickly outgrow the former because population is decreasing but longer lives are increasing.
This multi-generational trend—that is, one not easily or quickly changed—affects insurance, investments, political office seekers, schools, medicine, manual labor, researchers, the military, recreation, sports, and so forth. Suddenly, pickle ball injuries are an issue, and ads in the media focus on assisted living, arthritis, diabetes, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, cognitive decline, and so on—capitalism at work.
Intelligent immigration policies (right now, an oxymoron) and artificial intelligence will deal with some of these dysfunctions, as will incentives for seniors to continue to contribute in the workplace or as entrepreneurs.
However, if you’re under 60, don’t fret about Covid or AI. Start thinking about the tectonic demographic change under your feet that will grip every one of you! It will be a very different society.
