This Is for the Birds

Today's NYT reports that the critically endangered, flightless Kakapo parrots in New Zealand (once down to 51 birds) now have over 300 birds because of a “mating frenzy” as a result of their favorite food trees in unusually large blossom this past year. Normally the parrots mate only every two years, but this past year over 90 chicks were born.

Perhaps there is a clear answer here to our population decline: an abundance of delicious foods to create a mating frenzy. I vote for lobster and cheeseburgers….
