This week’s focus point: We use “culture” fairly indiscriminately, citing it to explain why things don’t change or can’t change. We talk about school cultures, business cultures, culture clashes, merging cultures, and so forth. In my experience, “culture” represents that set of beliefs which govern behavior. Therefore, culture is fungible. It can change based on conscious and unconscious alterations in our belief systems. If you want to create change, therefore, don’t resort to coercion or peer pressure. Instead, demonstrate what is in someone else’s enlightened self-intereset. People have stopped smoking because they believe it’s harmful and they won’t be able to live their lives and enjoy their families. They don’t obey the speed limits (despite coercion from police) because they don’t believe the limits are realistic and believe they are capable of safely driving faster. We can change “culture” by influencing our own and others’ belief systems. Just ask any successful politician.
