Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 10/28/2024
I was co-hosting a workshop for professional speakers with my long-time partner in the offering in Las Vegas. My partner had a good friend who was a participant, and that friend had a new “status” partner, an apparently big-deal attorney. She invited the both of us to join her and the attorney at his private club for dinner, along with four other course participants. Okay, why not?
The attorney showed up about 30 minutes before the program adjourned that day, unexpected, sitting himself in the back of the room. When we were introduced, he seemed detached. But, maybe he had a big trial underway, right?
That evening we arrived at a nice club, he “presided” at the head of the table, and the discussions were interesting, though he played a small part in them. But then I experienced a huge surprise. The server handed us all separate checks! (I’ll let that sink in for a moment. At my club only members can pay, for example, by signing the meal to their account.)
My business partner was so stunned and embarrassed that she grabbed my check and insisted she would pay for the both of us, no matter how much I protested. Her friend was still looking at this guy lovingly, and I was wondering if he’d still look as good to her with the remnants of my Crème Brûlée on his face.
Money doesn’t create “class.” A poverty mentality is not as common among the poor as it is among the well-off. It’s not just a matter of picking up the check, it’s a matter of sophistication, taste, and style, of knowing when to be gracious, how to treat people. The reality of describing a poverty mentality is not an epithet or an example of bias. It’s simply commenting on observed behavior.
It’s the opposite of an abundance mentality. Pick up the metaphorical check.
