Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 11/25/2024
One of the dangers of looking back is that people feel the “old days” are simply nostalgia and not worth dwelling on, or that you’re not capable of dealing with the present. Recognizing that, and knowing my readers are very intelligent and discerning, I’ll continue.
Pregnant women (not “pregnant people”) often smoked and drank alcohol. Car seat belts weren’t always used, even once available (I used to hook mine behind me to avoid the alarm). We played stickball in the street, between oncoming cars. We ate highly sweetened candies and drank sugared sodas. There were no “safety officers” in schools, nor was going to the principal’s office to complain about perceived mistreatment any kind of intelligent option. We were beaten up sometimes, and life was unfair. The school athletic coaches were moonlighting teachers who seldom knew more than we did, so injuries went untreated and excuses weren’t tolerated.
We had no video games, we made up games that were somewhat dangerous (any of you remember “Buck Buck”?). We frothed at the mouth awaiting a learner’s permit at 16 and then begged to borrow the sole family car, which was parked at the curb, and had to be dug out after snowstorms.
However, our public schools had dedicated, highly educated teachers who brooked no nonsense and whom parents supported. No parent came in crying “We’re getting too much homework!” or “My child’s grade is too low!” We were taught how to diagram a sentence, memorize the multiplication tables, understand poetry, appreciate perspective in art and harmony in music. We put on plays and read famous books, and religious observance was considered normal for those so inclined.
I took a (now extinct) liberal arts curriculum in college, was forced to take a foreign language, science, and English beyond my major (political science).
You know, most of us made it through and tried to live productive lives without “safe spaces” and “trigger warnings” and 15 safety nets. We were not dropping dead on the streets, and in fact, “personal injury lawyers” weren’t only not on TV, they weren’t anywhere. Yet here we all are, having managed to perpetuate the species.
(I was thinking of posting this in cursive, so that younger generations will not be able to read it. But that seems harsh.)
In the good old days when there was no social media and no mobile phones, when you were forced to actually physically meet someone and you often mixed in the same social groups, there was a sense of accountability about things.—Ulrika Jonsson
Life is an ordeal, albeit an exciting one, but I wouldn’t trade it for the good old days of poverty and obscurity. —Jim Carrey
I have heard of Texas pioneers living without bread or anything made from the cereals for months without suffering, using the breast-meat of wild turkeys for bread. Of this kind, they had plenty in the good old days when life, though considered less safe, was fussed over the less. —John Muir
In the good old days when I was a senator, I was my own man. —Joe Biden

New Newsletter: Not Without Honor…. (Began October 15)
“A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” —The Gospel of Mark, 6:4
Join me for a monthly newsletter that will explore, analyze and predict ramifications of issues and events in global societies. Each issue will focus on topics that will include politics, social mores, the arts, sports, technology, financial affairs, and other contemporary issues. Develop the ability to discuss current issues with dexterity and insight and become an object of interest to others, whether clients, colleagues, or friends. The discussions will be brief and focus on several issues per edition. Letters and commentary from readers will be welcome.
For example, as we are undergoing the dynamics of morbidity outpacing fertility in most developed countries, there will be a profound labor shortage if actions are not taken rapidly. This includes such diverse political systems as China and the US. There are three key areas, that must be utilized to accommodate what is apparently a multi-generational problem. We’ll discuss what they are and analyze what must be done to successfully resolve the dilemma. You get the idea. The first issue launched in October. The fee is $500 for the year of newsletters, including all back issues if you join during the year. https://alanweiss.com/growth-experiences/not-without-honor/

and, finally, this special offering:
Master Master Class 2025: I’m happy to once again offer the unique Master Master Class in 2025. It will be in the exquisite Newport area on March 12-13, two full days of learning, experimenting, and building new collegial relationships.
We will achieve: • New offerings and IP for a volatile, No Normal® world. • A consistent “voice” of expertise in your market—a “go to” magnetism and attraction. • The identification and evaluation of your existing “body of work” to be repurposed and exploited for passive income. • A book idea—commercially published or self-published, hard copy or electronic, written by you or “ghosted”—that will establish and perpetuate your stature. • The HOV lane for advisory work with high fees and low labor. • The confidence and presence to deal successfully with anyone at any time in any environment. (Very special role plays.)
This will be all new material from prior Master Classes. The fee will be $15,000 which includes lodging and most meals and a reception. (This will probably be the last Master Class I conduct in person, on site. No, I’m not kidding.) I have three people already attending simply by hearing me discuss this informally. My limit is a dozen people. It will not be recorded, but you may attend by Zoom, although I caution you on the intrinsic disadvantages of so doing. Attendees may record the session on their own.
