Christmas now approaches. Families are struggling to decide how to get together, even IF to get together. My son, his wife, a friend, and their dog just drove here from LA. They arrived, isolated for a day, took Covid tests with rapid response, as did my wife, who I took to a hut in a CVS parking lot! I took a home test which reported two days later. All of us are negative, and so the biggest challenge is acclimating their dog and ours. Bentley can be somewhat, ah, difficult. We used to test trees to bring home, now we test family to allow home.
Perhaps because of Covid I haven’t seen as much (any) protesting about Christmas, church and state separation, “humanism,” and so on. I’ve never cared if someone believed or didn’t believe in God, I just found it reasonable to live and let live, not assume the other person is somehow unintelligent. Where have I heard that before?
I want to wish all of you, no matter what you believe or don’t believe, the true spirit of a Merry Christmas. And by that I mean loved ones around you, thankfulness for what we have and where we are, and a generosity to try to help others. When you boil it all away, I think true religion and also true good will is about tolerance and forgiveness. None of us is perfect. But that doesn’t mean we can’t be productive and supportive, loving and full of life.
And so from Maria, me, Bentley, and Coco, we wish you a Merry Christmas in that spirt and with that sentiment.
