Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 2/9/26
The Winter Olympics are here (starting on the same weekend as the Super Bowl, which prompts a sports OD). I love the games, largely because so many nations compete despite the odds of winning (you ought to watch the movie Eddie the Eagle about the British ski jumper, and then there’s always the Jamaican bobsled team in Cool Runnings).
Unfortunately (send your angry letters to [email protected]), and while I love Italian culture, people, food, and women (I married one), the opening ceremonies to me were a huge bore, fixated on size and esoteric drama (and lip-syncing). The Italian and I turned it off to watch The Pitt. It seems to me the Brits did this very well years ago (since no one can accuse the Brits of being outrageous) and the Canadians, while promising to introduce all the indigenous tribes of Canada, apparently after four hours or so, actually introduced every Canadian.
The Olympic goals (Citius, Altius, Fortius—Communiter) are laudable, yet I’m puzzled, in that case, as to why we keep count of who has how many medals, there are doping scandals, subjective judging, lawsuits, and we play the national anthem of the country of each first place winner. Seriously, does a hundredth of a second, or tenth of an inch really differentiate who’s best? Isn’t it all about how you play the game? I’d think Eddie Eagle is more of a role model than Domen Prevc with his sophisticated backing and training resources, holding the world record in ski jumping.
Ah, well, I do enjoy a good close race and good sportsmanship (sportspersonship?). I am not an Olympics grinch. And maybe I’m just not deep enough to understand the opening ceremony. (Or too shallow?) Andrea Bocelli, of course, whom we watched on the saved tape, was spectacular, as he always is.
