Alan Weiss’s Monday Morning Memo® – 6/22/26
In 1415 a much smaller English army led by King Henry V defeated an elite French force of noblemen using a “new” technology: longbows, which fired at significant range and could launch arrows that punctured armor. A huge proportion of the French nobility was lost. About a century later (1525) the French army of Francis I, apparently having learned nothing in 100 years, sent armored cavalry against Charles V, ruler of the Holy Roman Empire, and were slaughtered by a primitive long gun called the “arquebus.”
The American Civil War was a blood bath (over 800,000 deaths) because 18th Century tactics and field maneuvers over open ground were used against 20th Century budding inventions: massed artillery, observation balloons, sapping, submarines, and most of all, ironclad ships.
I’ll skip the centuries of machine guns, submarines, aircraft, tanks, and missiles, to arrive today at drones. We are experiencing warfare where relatively inexpensive weaponry and smart tactics can gain great ends. The Ukraine/Russian War is longer than World War I and approaching World War II in duration. The Russians were planning to be in Kiev in two weeks. In the Middle East, the US is effectively controlling the skies, but it requires million dollar missiles to knock down thousand dollar drones.
I mention this because, unfortunately, war often provides huge lessons in communications, medicine, transportation—and organization. The future of business will not be an extension of the past “aided” by AI, nor will it be an AI universe subjugating humanity. But we are already seeing hybrid work forces (on site and remote), robots delivering room service, autonomous transportation, telemedicine, automated factories. We’ll soon be seeing holographic images at meetings, devices charged without connecting to wires, and drone police vehicles.
We need to take the best of the past that will still work well, improve what we have now that requires enhancement to work well under new conditions, jettison what won’t work well (we’re talking about procedures and processes, not pets, for goodness sakes), and acquire new approaches for changed times. I see all that as opportunity, not threat, as fulfilling, not depressing.
So remove your mental “armor” and use your talents and resourcefulness. Don’t learn your lesson the hard way in a battle you can’t win.
